Rentoza Business Rescue: What South African Tech Renters Should Know

Rentoza Is in Business Rescue. Here’s What South African Tech Renters Should Know.

Last updated: 3 August 2026

Quick answer: Rentoza, the South African tech subscription company, entered voluntary business rescue on 1 July 2026 after it couldn’t secure new funding, fell behind on two years of financial audits, and ran into serious cash flow problems. A formal rescue plan is due by 4 September 2026. Business rescue doesn’t automatically cancel existing agreements, but if you rent through Rentoza, it’s a sensible time to understand your options. Epic Rentals, built by the team behind Epic Deals (trading in South Africa since 2013), offers a rent-to-own alternative called Rent2Keep, with a fast online application, free SA-wide delivery, and brand new stock with the manufacturer’s warranty.

What actually happened to Rentoza

Rentoza’s board passed a resolution to enter business rescue on 11 June 2026, and the company formally filed under Section 129 of the Companies Act on 1 July 2026. Business rescue practitioner Mpoti Moalusi, supported by Anthill Advisory, was appointed to run the process and held an initial meeting with creditors and staff on 17 July. A formal rescue plan is expected by 4 September 2026.

The company gave three main reasons for the filing: it couldn’t raise new equity or debt funding, it hadn’t completed financial audits for the 2024 or 2025 financial years, and liquidity pressures meant it couldn’t pay creditors for the following six months. Rentoza had raised roughly $7.3 million over its lifetime from investors including the Mineworkers Investment Company, Alitheia IDF, the Vumela Fund, and Startupbootcamp AfriTech, and at its peak had around 14,000 active subscriptions, the majority of them smartphones.

What business rescue actually means

Business rescue is a formal, court-recognised process for companies in financial distress. It temporarily shields the company from creditor lawsuits while a practitioner assesses whether it can be turned around or should be wound down in an orderly way, and the company can keep trading while that happens. It is not the same as liquidation, and it doesn’t automatically cancel existing customer contracts.

This is general information, not legal advice. If you have an active agreement with Rentoza and want to know exactly where you stand, the right people to ask are Rentoza itself or the appointed business rescue practitioner, not a competitor’s blog post.

If you’re thinking about switching, here’s what’s actually worth checking

  • Track record. How long has the company been trading, and under what brand, before the current one.
  • Ownership path. Are you renting indefinitely, or is there a clear point where the device is actually yours.
  • Where support sits. Is delivery, warranty, and after-sales handled locally in South Africa, or routed offshore.
  • Who approves your application. Understanding who is actually financing and vetting the agreement tells you a lot about how stable it is.

Frequently asked questions

A formal legal process under Section 129 of the Companies Act that temporarily protects a financially distressed company from creditor lawsuits while a practitioner works out whether it can be rehabilitated or should be wound down in an orderly way. The company can keep trading during this process.

Is my Rentoza contract automatically cancelled?

Not automatically. If you have an active agreement, contact Rentoza or the appointed business rescue practitioner directly to find out how it affects your specific contract.

Is Epic Rentals affiliated with or taking over Rentoza?

No. Epic Rentals is a separate, independent company built by the team behind Epic Deals, trading in South Africa since 2013. This article is based on publicly available news reporting and is provided for general information only.

How is Rent2Keep different from a subscription?

Rent2Keep is a rent-to-own model. You pay monthly and work towards owning the device outright over the course of the agreement, rather than renting indefinitely with no path to ownership.

Apply online in about five minutes, get a decision within 24 to 48 hours, and approved orders are delivered free anywhere in South Africa.
