Rent to own in South Africa: how it works

What rent to own means, what it costs, how it differs from a subscription or buying on credit, and what you need to apply. Written by the team at Epic Rentals, who rent brand-new appliances, tech and furniture to keep.

What rent to own means

You pick an item and a term. You pay the same amount every month for that term. At the end you pay one final amount and the item is yours, or you upgrade to something newer. You get the item now and spread the cost, without paying the full price upfront.

With Epic Rentals the term is anything from 6 to 60 months, the monthly is fixed for the whole term, and the final payment is one monthly payment. Everything is brand new and delivered free anywhere in South Africa.

Rent to own, subscription or buying on credit?

Three different arrangements, and the differences matter more than the names.

If your rental company runs into trouble

Business rescue does not by itself cancel an agreement, and the rules depend on your contract. If your provider is in difficulty, keep your paperwork, speak to the practitioner or an attorney before you stop paying, and read our explainer: what is public, what to do, and what to check before you choose another provider.

Questions

What does rent to own mean?

You pay a fixed amount every month for a set term. At the end you pay one final amount to keep the item, or you upgrade. With Epic Rentals the term is 6 to 60 months and the final amount is one monthly payment.

Is rent to own the same as a subscription?

Not always. Some subscription services are built around using an item and handing it back, so you never own it. Rent to own is built around you keeping it at the end. Check which one you are signing up for.

Is it cheaper than buying on credit?

It depends on the item, the term and the fees, so compare the total you would pay over the whole term, not just the monthly. Shorter terms cost less overall. Longer terms lower the monthly.

Do I need a deposit?

With Epic Rentals only on the 6-month term, where it is 25%. From 12 months there is no deposit.

Will I be approved?

Our finance partner assesses every application. Clean, complete documents and a monthly that sits comfortably inside your income help. We usually come back to you within 24 hours, and approval is never guaranteed.
